Cancellieri Displays Brief Sparks of Genius in Bright Spot for Unstable Lazio

The mood at their home stadium was anything but joyful during the weekend fixture. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a team that had conceded ten goals while scoring only two in their most recent five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were concluding their ongoing dissent in a long-running conflict with club owner Claudio Lotito.

A Season Unraveling?

Was Lazio's season falling apart, or did there exist a thread maintaining its structure from the beginning? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as head coach this summer, before he to later acknowledge that the club had failed to disclose the transfer ban they were set to be hit with for accounting issues. Rumours that he might quit were unfounded, but he did say that Lotito had "swindled" him.

The Roman club became as messy on the pitch as behind the scenes, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing their other opening fixtures, which included the capital clash. From one game to the next, it's been difficult to ascertain if they are improving or imploding.

Cancellieri's Unexpected Return

A single player remained positive throughout. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to be at Lazio this season. He was on last season at Parma as a loanee and, at the start of the off-season, his parent club were advocating for him to extend his stay for another season. The registration embargo led to a change of plans. The club couldn't risk to reduce their roster lacking backup options.

Cancellieri arrived initially during Sarri's previous tenure, at that time a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 league appearances with the club in 2022-23, almost all of those as a substitute. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended at the end of that season, subsequently claimed Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri was destined for stardom only to bench him consistently."

Discovering His True Position

It's possible the coach was persistently working to work out the nature of the player's talent. Originally described as an attacking winger when he joined, Cancellieri yet was deployed for most of that campaign as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile at No 9. During 63 outings on loan at Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
