In a significant development ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the wake of large-scale and deadly youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Address Youth Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which led to significant loss of life.
"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the deal was signed.
The late summer uprising was sparked by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of systemic graft in politics.
Details of the Fresh Political Agreement
According to the official pact, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the country's established political class. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.
Wider Political Consultations Underway
In a related development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with a number of leading political figures. These talks included former prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the uprising.
Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared duty. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
