Seven alleged members of German left-wing extremist organization face trial over series of violent incidents

Seven individuals accused of being the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network began their trial on this week, facing charges for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that earned them the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

Global terror listing and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the United States classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization together with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany claim the network was behind targeting locations in the country and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G and Paul M, are additionally accused for attacks in Budapest during early 2023, around an yearly gathering called the “day of honor” that draws far-right participants from across Europe.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T, is currently on trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against far-right activists in the lead-up to the same rally in that year.

Regional context and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, responsible for planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and simulated violent actions. At depots overseen by the suspect, the network allegedly accumulated tools, pepper spray, disguises and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and international reactions

Another militant formerly involved with the organization, Lina E, became a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation makes group members barred from entering the United States, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

Germany's far-right AfD party applauded the US decision and urged the German administration to follow suit. In contrast, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The threat from the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have received convictions or remain detained.”
