Approximately 50 automobiles have been marked with what appears to be blood from a person in the Germany's town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.
Vehicles, exterior walls and mailboxes were marked, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they reported in a statement.
Police say they were alerted late on Wednesday evening, when a individual noticed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued substance.
The liquid had been applied in the shape of a swastika, they added.
Police then discovered numerous other vandalized automobiles and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under legislation prohibiting the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.
Law enforcement report preliminary tests indicate the fluid was likely blood from a person.
"At present there remains no lead as to its source; authorities are currently not cognizant of any harm in connection with the incident," they added.
Local authorities stated they were attempting "to solve the mystery" and have asked to the community for tips.
A senior representative said the vandalism rendered him stunned and needed to be resolved quickly.
"This event affects the center of Hanau and revives the wounds of the far-right attack half a decade ago," he posted on a platform, mentioning the murder of nine victims by a shooter aiming at people of migrant background in 2020.
